Research backgroud
Pakin-mediated quality control (mitophagy) has been recognized as a critical process to keep mitochondrial health. Heart depends upon mitochondrial ATP generated from available metabolic substrates. Increasing oxygen exchange in the early embryo provokes a change from anaerobic glycolysis to aerobic mitochondrial respiration. After birth, mitochondria respiration undergoes a further transition to fatty acid metabolism and small asymmetrical fetal cardiomyocyte mitochondria are supplanted by larger ovoid adult mitochondria. What is the mechanisms underlying cardiac mitochondrial plasticity?
